The Other Woman was Captain America’s downfall this weekend (isn’t that just all too common?). The trio of jilted lovers finally toppled the reign of Captain America at the top of the box office. Opening right in the middle of expectations, the Mann, Diaz, Upton combo defied reviews and scored a solid opening. Adding to the totals, Brick Mansions and The Quiet Ones also hit expected ranges and kept the box office numbers floating some 25% above last year’s take.
Next week the battle for year over year supremacy will be likely be lost as The Amazing Spider-Man 2 will likely not have the super hero strength to best the huge opening on last year’s Iron Man 3. This will begin a tough May period that will most probably show successive 2014/2013 drops until 5/30, bringing down the overall year/year increase to about 8% by quarter’s end. Spidey will open very well all things considered, but his challenge is a lot bigger than besting the evil doers in his current film.
IMAX results for Spider 2 are very strong and it will be rolling out in China and North America next week and robust results are expected.
