Lone Survivor was the lone survivor atop the grosses this weekend. On the strength of terrific word of mouth and lots of male fueled interest it outperformed significantly the expectations, much as Act of Valor did upon initial release. The debut of The Legend of Hercules met with stunningly bad reviews and a poor response by online users, however the B– from Cinemascore stands out in contrast. Nevertheless it should burn quickly.
The expansions of Her and August: Osage County performed about where they were expected to. Hercules also was came in about as expected. The success of Lone Survivor provided the impetus for a 2014 vs 2013 uptick and that trend should continue next weekend as we hit MLK weekend and several new films including The Nut Job, Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, Ride Along, and The Devil’s Due. Devil’s due isn’t making much of a mark in Google searches as seen below and on the last page, and does not show. I, Frankenstein which did not get much positive buyer response at the screening here in the heartland is however showing some significant strength and will probably score pretty well on opening week.
