Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles sustained its place atop the leaderboard this weekend followed again by Guardians of the Galaxy. The lackluster results of the new openings clipped the year over year gain to only about 3% as Expendables 3 looked like it had expended its machismo fuel, The Giver didn’t give much, and Let’s Be Cops couldn’t bring a whole lot in the way of protecting and serving the box office numbers.
Next week looks rather anemic as well on the new openings front. Then again, last year’s numbers were pretty pathetic as well so we are likely in for another increase over 2013’s sickly late August. Frank Miller’s Sin City: A Dame to Kill For will most likely be the top of the heap when it comes to openings and if it manages to pull in over 20 Million will very probably lead the weekend. If I Stay the young adult movie of the week is gunning for second spot in the openings derby but might not make it past fourth overall. When the Game Stands Tall is looking more dwarfish than basketball center-ish.
All in all though we continue to make up some of the ground we lost mid-summer.
