As was expected Cinderella (IMAX reporting 5 Million of the total, a record for PG 2D) threw off a big number this weekend with about 70 Million, dwarfing the opening of Run All Night which debuted at about 11 Million.
That very strong opening shot us way beyond the same week last year which was anchored by Mr. Peabody and Sherman in its second week at almost 22 million. The openings last year were weak and as a result, box office soared 22% over 2014.
Next week the 2014 vs 2015 competition pits Divergent: Insurgent along with The Gunman and Do You Believe? against Divergent and Muppets Most Wanted. While Muppets did more than Gunman and Do You Believe? are expected to combined, we believe that Insurgent will perform a little better than Divergent. The net result is probably a toss-up in terms of fresh gross, but the large head start from this week will certainly move us over 2014 once again and increase the rather remarkable year over year cumulative numbers versus last year.
The quarter then finishes with Get Hard and Home going up against Noah and Sabotage. Get Hard is showing pretty decent advance interest and Home is expected to do pretty well also, giving rise to the expectation of yet another week where 2015 tops 2014 and a quarter up approximately 5% over a very strong 1st quarter last year.
From there it will be a bumpy ride through the 2nd quarter with a lot riding on whether Avengers: Age of Ultron and Furious 7 can repeat the success that their predecessors have had. Expectations now would be that the 2nd quarter will end up a little bit up over 2014, with Q4 surging past last year’s tepid final quarter.
