Massively wintery weather affected much of the nation this weekend an atmospheric phenomenon that without a doubt depressed grosses across the east and south, not to mention our own home town here in the Greater Kansas City Area.
After the sun comes out and the shovels are put to rest, we may see a better than average Sunday relative to the usual weekend tally.
Focus which we had pegged to reach the upper 20’s managed to only get near 20 Million while Lazarus Effect estimated in the low teens barely managed to break double digits. Holdover numbers however were pretty solid only down about 35% (bolstered without a doubt by some sub-run breaks).
IMAX rolled out Focus on 351 screens this weekend and managed to score about 2.1 Million on those screens, a healthy share of over 10%. Internationally the Will Smith caper film pulled in over 3 Million. Next week they roll on to Neill Blomkanp’s Chappie then Cinderella on March 13.
We had forecast a fall off versus 2014 of about 15%, but thanks to strong holds, the damage held firm at -12%. Next week Unfinished Business, Chappie, and The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel tag team against 300: Rise of an Empire and Mr. Peabody and Sherman. The magic 8 ball forecasts another week of decline versus 2014, but that should reverse on 3/13 with Run All Night and Cinderella up against weak competition from 3/14/14.
