Women drive the box office this weekend. The Fault in Our Stars shown above all else with an estimated 48.2 Million, eclipsing the second week of Maleficent and the opening of Edge of Tomorrow. Both new films scored pretty well on about every opinion measure which normally bespeaks of a solid multiple for each.

We called for an estimate of about a 43 Million top on Fault and a median of about 29 Million on Edge. So overall with openings higher than expected and holds running about as expected, the total box office is running approximately 9% ahead of the equivalent week in 2013, bringing good news as we continue to improve over earlier forecasts.

Next week the two opening films are both highly anticipated. 22 Jump Street and How to Train Your Dragon 2 will need to open well to eclipse the approximately 137 Million racked up by last year’s Man of Steel and This is the End. The potential is conceivably there but the two will have to open exceptionally well relative to their predecessors.

So the 2nd quarter looks promising and it better be as right now, the 3rd is appearing weaker after schedule changes have gnawed into the potential.
