No surprises were in evidence this weekend with each of the three opening films performing in the middle of their expected ranges. Ender’s Game appealing to a mix of older and younger males led the way with about a 27 Million dollar tally. Eventual results will depend on how the book’s faithful respond long term to this good adaptation of the classic Science Fiction novel.
Last Vegas was trending unsurprisingly toward older males in this older male version of The Hangover. Its finish at about 15 Million for the weekend should promise a gross of 40 – 50 million. And that brings us to Free Birds which took a bite out of Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2. Despite fairly negative reviews, audiences were pretty okay with it and it should hang around at least until Frozen comes along near Thanksgiving (and the once in a millennium coincident Chanukah).
Next week the decks are cleared for the opening of Thor: The Dark World, sequel to you guessed it, Thor in 2011. This time around of course Disney has the reigns instead of Paramount and the numbers on the interest scale are stellar. Thor: The Dark World will open in IMAX 3D and 3D as well as standard formats. TTDW competes against Skyfall from last year making for a tough comp. Will the god of thunder be up for the challenge?
Speaking of IMAX, IMAX reports that Ender’s Game grossed 5.2 Million in 27 countries on 132 screens, and Thor: Dark World is in Iron Man 3 territory in its international IMAX debut and is way ahead of Thor in similar locations.
This week estimates have the numbers down about 6% and with the competition in openings we probably will see a decrease in year over year gross for the week. Likely it will continue until the Hunger Games: Catching Fire juggernaut hits the screens later this month.
