Divergent diverged from the rest of the films this weekend in that it recorded a strong 56 Million Dollar opening, in line with our lower bound of estimates. While critics may not have much appreciated the film apparently its audience found it to their liking with it receiving generally favorable scores from viewers and generally unfavorable reviews.
Muppets Most Wanted also wound up in our predicted range albeit toward the lower end of it as well. Muppets did not fare quite as well in opinion polls but should post solid holdover numbers nevertheless as is typical of its genre.
Freestyle Releasing scored well with God’s Not Dead in 780 runs with about 8.56 Million projected for the three days and excellent per run debut.
According to IMAX, Divergent claimed about 4.8 Million from its 348 IMAX runs. Divergent will surrender some IMAX screens this weekend to Noah which goes in the big format both in domestic and international markets.
Given everything our box office squeaked by this weekend last year by about 2%. Next week will be more difficult as it brings the debut of Noah and Sabotage as the widest releases with an expansion of Bad Words from Focus as well. Noah looks very strong at the moment and will be the likely winner, however the competition from 2013 is strong, led by G.I. Joe: Retaliation. Combined with The Host and last year’s seasonal Tyler Perry entry, new openings accounted for over 72 Million in fresh box office a figure that will be hard to match this year.
