Your guide to this weekend’s new movies.

Right now there seems to be a continuing trend of films over promising and under delivering. Not so for The Angry Birds Movie it opened right about where it should have. Though most of the advance interest metrics were heavily influenced by the films on 5/27, the Angry Birds approximately 38 Million dollar opening was right within expectations. The Nice Guys also came up about where every one expected. A darkly violent comedy, it did not capture much of the imagination percolating in in the public.

What was surprising was the ultimate softness of Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising.

This weekend our favorite mutants return in X-Men: Apocalypse while not getting as much critical acclaim as the previous installment X-Men: Days of Future Past, it does appear to be well on its way to a very nice Memorial Day Weekend opening.

Another sequel debuting is Alice Through the Looking Glass the follow up to, you guessed it, Alice in Wonderland. Once again, reviews are not as kind and this second of Lewis Carroll’s satiric takes on England was not as popular. Nonetheless it will be reaping a decent haul, and will help to provide a weekend strong enough to put the industry well ahead of last year’s equivalent week.
